Obituary of Mrs. George Ray

The following obituary was transcribed by Suzanne Forte (suzanneforte@bellsouth.net) from a scrapbook in her possession, belonging to her great grandmother, Cora Lorena Foster Weeks. Lorena was born Jan 25, 1877 in Freestone Co, Texas and died Jan 6, 1952 in Gilmer County, Georgia. This obituary was presumably from the Gilmer County newspaper, the Times Courier, but could have been from the Atlanta, Georgia, newspaper, the Atlanta Journal/Constitution.

"Mrs. Georgia Ray Passes At Her Home At Cartecay Oct 6"

In the death of Mrs. Georgia Ray at her home in her 79th year October 6, 1949, Cartecay Church has lost another faithful member. She was born Oct 12, 1870 and was the youngest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Pettit. Mr. Alec Pettit of Sapulpa, Okla, is the only surviving member of her father's family.

In 1904 she was married to Mr. Bascomb Martin and to this union two children were born, both of whom are living. Oral Martin lives in East Ellijay and Miss Oden lived with her mother in Cartecay. Mr. Bascomb Martin died in 1917 and Mrs. Georgia was left a widow until 1920 when she was married to Mr. D. C. Ray. Mr. Ray died in 1920 and Mrs. Georgia lived a widow until death. She had her share of the troubles and disappointments of life, but never complained.

She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and good neighbor and a Christian woman who enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew her.

She had great faith in Him, who doeth all things well. This faith, linked with her many Chistian virtues enabled her to live a life that was meek, modest, gentle and patient. She had been in poor health for two years and for the last several months had been confined to her bed. Funeral services were held in Cartecay Church Saturday afternoon by Revs. H. D. Helton her pastor and L. F. VanLandingham a former pastor. Burial was made in the church cemetery with B. C. Logan & Son funeral directors in charge.
