Obituary of Audely Buffington

The following obituary was transcribed by Suzanne Forte (suzanneforte@bellsouth.net) from a scrapbook in her possession, belonging to her great grandmother, Cora Lorena Foster Weeks. Lorena was born Jan 25, 1877 in Freestone Co, Texas and died Jan 6, 1952 in Gilmer County, Georgia. This obituary was presumably from the Gilmer County newspaper, the Times Courier, but could have been from the Atlanta, Georgia, newspaper, the Atlanta Journal/Constitution.

"Bee Stings Fatal to Audely Buffington"

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the East Ellijay Baptist Church for Audely Buffington. Rev. W. F. Simmons and Rev. Oscar Land officiating. Interment was in the East Ellijay cemetery with Logan Funeral Home in charge.

Audley, better known to his friends as "Bus" died Sunday morning shortly after he was attacked and stung several times about the head by a swarm of bees. Audely and Henry Cantrell had just finished cutting a wild honey tree near the Buffington home when the bees made the attack. Stricken suddenly ill from the effect of the stings, Audely died before reaching home and while medical aid was being summoned. He was 40 years old.

The son of Mrs. Emma Buffington and the late J. K. Buffington, the deceased was born and reared in East Ellijay where his entire life was spent. At the time of his death he was employed as a clerk at the E. H. McArthur store in East Ellijay. He was well known and held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends as evidenced by the beautiful floral offerings and the overflowing crowd which gathered at the church to pay their last tribute of respect.

Mr. Buffington is survived by his wife and two children; his mother, Mrs. Emma Buffington; a sister, Mrs. Helen Medley, five brothers, Kenneth, Oran, Wayne, Tom of East Ellijay and Victor of the U.S. Air Force.
