Obituary of William Bailey

The following obituary was transcribed by Suzanne Forte (suzanneforte@bellsouth.net) from a scrapbook in her possession, belonging to her great grandmother, Cora Lorena Foster Weeks. Lorena was born Jan 25, 1877 in Freestone Co, Texas and died Jan 6, 1952 in Gilmer County, Georgia. This obituary was presumably from the Gilmer County newspaper, the Times Courier, but could have been from the Atlanta, Georgia, newspaper, the Atlanta Journal/Constitution.

Name: Bailey, William

Date: 13 Jan 1953

"William Bailey Dies Undergoing Operation"

The entire community was shocked Tuesday afternoon when news came that William Bailey had died while undergoing an emergency appendectomy in a Canton hospital. He was 15 years old and a son of the Rev. and Mrs. Young A. Bailey. His father is a Methodist minister who for health reasons retired several years ago from his pastorate here and is now city clerk and treasurer. His mother is a teacher in the local schools, and his only brother, John is a student a Young Harris College.

William was a likeable lad, popular at school, and it is said that every man, woman and child on his paper route was his friend. He was senior carrier here for the Atlanta Journal for whom he started delivering about seven years ago.

Funeral services will be conducted in Watkins Memorial Church of which he was a member, at 2 o'clock Thursday by the Rev. W. D. Gray, assisted by Dr. C. M. Lipham, Dalton, and the Rev. Harry Lee Wood, Canton. Burial wil be in Ellijay cemetery.
