Gilmer County Historical Markers

In 1951, the Georgia General Assembly created the Georgia Historical Commission. The Commission was responsible for promoting the understanding of Georgia History. Between 1952 and 1959 -- the GHC embarked on an ambitious program of erecting official state historical markers. Since that time the Commission errected additional markers until 1968. Georgia's Executive Reorganization Act of 1972 abolished the Georgia Historical Commission. Currently new markers are errected under a program overseen by the Georgia Historical Society.
